Walk down the trash bag aisle and you will see two ways of packing the same kitchen bag: bags interleaved in a dispenser box, and bags on a perforated roll. The bag inside may be identical, but the packing changes how fast staff can change a bin, how much space the stock takes and how many bags get wasted. This guide explains the difference and when each one makes sense.
What Are Interleaved Trash Bags?
Interleaved bags are folded so that each bag overlaps the next one, a little like facial tissues. They are packed on a roll or folded stack inside a box with a dispenser opening. When you pull one bag out, the top of the next bag follows it and waits at the opening. You get one bag at a time, with one hand, and no tearing along perforations.

Interleaved bags dispense one at a time from the box opening.

What Are Perforated Rolls?
On a perforated roll the bags are joined end to end and separated by a line of small cuts. You unroll a bag and tear it off at the perforation. Rolls are compact and simple, and they are the most common format for bulk and commercial bags such as LD trash bags and star seal bags.

Interleaved vs Rolls: Side-by-Side
| Interleaved box | Perforated roll | |
|---|---|---|
| Dispensing | One bag at a time, one hand | Unroll and tear, usually two hands |
| Speed at the bin | Fastest, next bag is always ready | Slower, especially with wet or gloved hands |
| Wasted bags | Few, bags do not tear in the wrong place | Occasional torn or double-pulled bags |
| Storage | Box sits on a shelf or in a cabinet | Compact roll, fits in a drawer or the bottom of a bin |
| Presentation | Neat retail box, good for resale | Simple, ideal for back-of-house |
| Best for | Kitchens, hotels, offices, retail shelves | Janitorial carts, warehouses, bulk use |

Prefer Rolls? Drawstring Bags on a Roll
If you would rather keep compact rolls, our drawstring bags also come on perforated rolls: Size S 3 gallon, Size M 6 gallon and Size L 8 gallon with 15 bags per roll, larger 50-bag rolls (S, M, L), and scented drawstring bags for bathrooms and small bins.
Which Format Should You Choose?
- Choose interleaved if staff change bins many times a day, if the bags are stored in a kitchen or guest area, or if you resell bags to consumers.
- Choose rolls for janitorial carts, warehouses and any place where compact storage and the lowest cost per bag matter most.
- Use both if you run different areas: interleaved boxes in the kitchen or front of house, rolls on the cleaning cart.

Interleaved bags come out of the box one at a time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an interleaved bag stronger than a bag on a roll?
Not by itself. Strength depends on size, material and thickness. Interleaving only changes how the bags are folded and dispensed.
What size is a 13 gallon kitchen bag?
Our 13 gallon interleaved bags are 24 x 27 in, which fits most standard tall kitchen cans.
Can I buy interleaved bags wholesale?
Yes. Case packs of 4, 6 or 10 rolls are available online, and distributors can request a quote for pallet orders. Browse all drawstring trash bags.
